Yard Sales For Sellers

Yard Sales and Checks

Should you accept checks at your sale?

The short answer: no. While you’re certainly free to accept them if you’re willing to take the risk, and no one likes to look like they’re questioning peoples’ honesty by refusing to take them, checks in general should just be avoided. The problem with checks is you just never know by looking at them whether the account they are based on is open or closed. People may be more inclined to write you a bad check because they figure you’re not a real store and they can get away with it.

Another good reason to avoid checks: contact your bank and ask how much they will charge you if someone else’s check bounces in your account. Many banks will fine you for this, meaning not only are you out the worth of the check, but also the $25 or so that the bank will charge.
