Protect Perennials in the Winter

This tip can help to protect your precious perennials, but not for the reason you might think.

Try covering all your perennials with a thin layer of hay, grass clippings or leaves before winter sets in. This layer of insulation will actually insure that the ground remains frozen. Perennials that are thawed too early in the spring and then face a sudden freeze can be damaged or killed.
