While it’s the blades that usually get the most beating, the handle of a shovel needs some special care to extend its life as well.

Handles can dry out, and when they do, the wood is much more liable to become weakened, causing the handle to suddenly snap… a rather expensive way to make very thick tomato stakes. You can keep handles from drying out by using a rag to rub linseed oil into it every once in a while. Just make sure you first sand any varnish off the handle, or the oil won’t have a chance to sink in.
