When Shopping With Children, Give Them Tasks

If you have no choice but to bring the kids with you when you grocery shop, resist impulse buying by giving them tasks.

Younger children can be in charge of coupons. Give the coupons to them to keep track of, and have then watch the aisles to try to find what is on the coupon. Older kids can keep track of purchases on a calculator. Keep kids occupied when shopping so that they’ll be less likely to whine you into purchases you wouldn’t normally make (strange how they are lured in by the brightly colored high end cereal and snack packaging, almost like the manufacturers intended it that way… hmm…).
