How-to: Milk Baths

Try Cleopatra’s favorite soak.

First the science. Milk contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxyl acid actually, which helps to dissolve the “glue” that holds dead skin together. As such, it is an excellent and effective cleanser, with the added bonus that it is easy and cheap to make. To create your own milk bath, just combine 3 cups of dry milk with several drops of your favorite essential (preferable) or fragrant oil. While the oil is optional, something like a lavender essential oil can greatly help to reduce stress. Other aromatherapy oils that are useful in baths include anything citrus such as orange or lemon (uplifts and stimulates) and eucalyptus or rosemary (for aching muscles).

Draw a bath and add about a half a cup of the milk/oil mixture, making sure that it dissolves completely. Soak for as long as you want, but 15 minutes is a bare minimum here (if only for the mental boost)!
