Buy Your Own Automotive Parts

If your garage will let you do this, you could save a bundle. If your garage allows it, do your own shopping for pricey car parts like transmissions or starter motors. It’s a pretty good bet that your mechanic won’t be doing any price-comparison shopping when they go to get the part, so you definitely won’t lose much by trying your hand at finding the part(s) yourself, whether new or used.

To find parts in your area, turn to your Yellow Pages and look under Automobile Parts and Supplies or Junk Dealers. You’ll have to do the legwork to go buy the part and get it to your mechanic, but you should be able to save quite a bit by shopping around.
