Report: Mac Users Paying More on Travel Site

If you’re using Orbitz to plan your next vacation or business trip and think you’re getting the best deal, you may want to think again… particularly if you’re logging onto it from a Mac computer.

A recent Wall Street Journal report found that the online travel site Orbitz was offering up pricier hotels to Mac users than PC users. Based on their research showing that Mac users were likely to spend up to 30% more per night for a room than PC users, Orbitz is rewarding such behavior by showing Mac users more expensive hotels when they do a search on their site.

Considering how much browser data one generates as they cruise across the Internet, this is likely not the only such instance of such a practice, and anyone shopping online would do well to take note of it and not place too much trust in retail search engines. They are not necessarily out to save you money. Shop around!

In terms of travel, other sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Travelocity deny that they are doing the same… so far.
